How long does beer last?

Although beer doesn’t necessarily expire in the sense that it will become unsafe to drink, in most cases it will become flat, flavourless and unappealing over time.

How long that will take is dependant upon the style of beer. Most styles such as IPAs and saisons are at the peak of their freshness following the first few months after bottling or canning, while porters and stouts have a longer shelf-life – hence why many breweries are stamping their brews with a best enjoyed before date.
However, many breweries such as Wild Beer Co. are experimenting and brewing with yeasts such as brettanomyces that allow beers to age in the bottle and develop their flavours over time, allowing beer lovers to ‘cellar’ their beer in the same way as a fine wine.
